Booklist Review

Ages 3-5. Libraries needing extra editions of old favorites will find these trim but attractive volumes acceptable choices. Of the two, the more interesting is Old Mother Hubbard; most children may be familiar with the opening stanza, but fewer will know the rest of the rhyme, in which the kindly woman goes out of her way to do the dog a favor but always finds him involved in something unexpected upon her return. (``She took him a clean dish / To get him some tripe; / But when she came back / He was smoking a pipe.'') Amoroso uses pristine colors and humorous nuances in thin horizontal panels to show Old Mother Hubbard going about her business, and in the facing full-page pictures, bursting with fun and frenzy, the action strays out of its borders. The Country Mouse and the City Mouse is a straightforward telling and although the artwork, done in softly hued watercolors, does not match that of the recent Janet Stevens' edition (Booklist 83:1371 My 1 87), it does display a certain cozy charm that very young ones will find soothing.
